Every guide to Amsterdam nightlife neighborhoods hands out the same four names. Rembrandtplein for the clubs, Leidseplein for the bars, the Red Light District for the crowds, the Jordaan for a brown café. Then it tells you Noord is "up and coming" and stops. None of them counts anything, so here is a count. Of the 94 bars, clubs, cocktail bars, pubs, wine bars, karaoke rooms and live-music rooms Tizy has revealed in Amsterdam with a Google rating, the ten that score 4.8 or better on fewer than 30 reviews sit, eight of them, outside the two postcodes that make up the tourist core. The nine that score under 4.3 on 500 or more reviews sit, eight of them, inside it. Every figure in this piece is measured 2026-10-09 from tizy-db, the live venue database behind Tizy, and every room named is a real listing with its real rating and review count.
So the short version, if the tram is already heading for the Munt: the two squares and the Red Light canals are where Amsterdam puts its visitors, and they hold the loudest rooms on Google. The best-rated rooms are two stops further out, in Oost, De Pijp, Oud-West and across the IJ, where almost nobody has left a review yet. Which of those you want depends on whether the night you want is a sure thing or a good one.
The postcode map rates backwards
Amsterdam's nightlife has two centres of gravity and both are postcodes. 1012 is the Centrum: the Dam, the Spui, the Zeedijk and the Red Light canals. 1017 is the square-and-side-street block south of the Amstel: Rembrandtplein, Thorbeckeplein, Reguliersdwarsstraat and the two Leidsedwarsstraats behind Leidseplein. Between them they hold 45 of the city's 94 rated nightlife rooms. Here is how the rest of the map compares, with the room's postcode read straight off its Google address.
| Area (postcodes) | Rated rooms | Avg rating | Reviews per room | Clubs | Rooms at 4.8+ | Rooms under 4.3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Centrum / Red Light District (1012) | 28 | 4.51 | 839 | 2 | 7 | 8 |
| Rembrandtplein / Leidseplein (1017) | 17 | 4.28 | 1,579 | 9 | 2 | 7 |
| Jordaan and the western canals (1015, 1016) | 9 | 4.54 | 1,695 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
| Oost: Oosterpark, Weesperzijde, Indische Buurt (1091–1097) | 9 | 4.80 | 396 | 0 | 7 | 0 |
| De Pijp (1072, 1074) | 7 | 4.69 | 409 | 1 | 4 | 0 |
| Oud-West and Westerpark (1051–1054) | 6 | 4.70 | 367 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| Eastern docks and Plantage (1011, 1018, 1019) | 5 | 4.48 | 1,449 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| Noord (1021, 1031) | 4 | 4.58 | 240 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
| City, all 94 rated rooms | 94 | 4.54 | 912 | 16 | 34 | 19 |
Two things fall out of that table. The first is that the busiest postcode is the worst-rated one. The 17 rooms in 1017 carry 26,851 reviews between them, more than the 28 rooms in 1012 carry, and they average 4.28, a quarter of a point under the city. Nine of Amsterdam's sixteen rated clubs are in that one postcode, and seven of its seventeen rooms rate under 4.3. The second is that the gap is not a tourist tax on the whole centre. The 28 rooms in 1012 average 4.51, almost exactly the city line, and seven of them rate 4.8 or better. What drags the Centrum is the Red Light strip itself, where Red Light Bar on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal (a 4.3 across 3,143), Temple Bar on the Kloveniersburgwal (4.2 across 1,853) and Drink n Sink on the Warmoesstraat (4.3 across 1,340) are among the most-reviewed bars in the city and none of them is above 4.3.
Pull the camera back and the pattern holds at every scale. The 45 rooms inside 1012 and 1017 average 4.42 on a median of 592 reviews. The 49 rooms outside them average 4.65 on a median of 344. Oost, with nine rooms, has none under 4.3 and seven at 4.8 or better. De Pijp and Oud-West, thirteen rooms between them, have none under 4.3 either. Every area outside the core beats the city average except the docks, and the docks are only dragged under by one club.
The near-perfect rooms are two tram stops out
Take the 94 rooms and keep only the ones with a rating of 4.8 or better and fewer than 30 reviews, the rooms Google loves but hardly anyone has written about. There are ten. Eight are outside 1012 and 1017.
| Venue | Type | Rating | Reviews | Postcode | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Houseconcert Amsterdam | Live music venue | 5.0 | 1 | 1092 | Oost, Linnaeusstraat |
| 't Cafe The Black | Live music venue | 5.0 | 1 | 1095 | Oost, Indische Buurt |
| Dikke Mic Karaoke Bar | Karaoke bar | 5.0 | 1 | 1013 | Houthavens, Danzigerkade |
| Stones Cafe Leidseplein | Pub | 5.0 | 3 | 1017 | core, Korte Leidsedwarsstraat |
| Club Cinetone | Live music venue | 5.0 | 5 | 1096 | Oost, Duivendrechtsekade |
| Wijnbar Rijp | Wine bar | 5.0 | 10 | 1091 | Oost, Weesperzijde |
| BAR KRAP | Live music bar | 5.0 | 13 | 1021 | Noord, Aambeeldstraat |
| Chapter 1896 | Cocktail bar | 5.0 | 17 | 1012 | core, Nieuwe Doelenstraat |
| WC Bar | Wine bar | 5.0 | 17 | 1018 | Oostelijke Eilanden, Czaar Peterstraat |
| Oosterpark Music Dome | Live music venue | 4.8 | 20 | 1092 | Oost, Linnaeusstraat |
Read the table for what it is. A 5.0 on one review is not a verdict, it is a first impression, and this piece will not pretend four live-music rooms with 27 reviews between them are the best nights in the city. What the table shows is where the new rooms are opening and where the people who go to them are not bothering to write it up. Five of the ten are in Oost. Two are on the water east of Centraal, in the Houthavens and on the Oostenburgergracht side. One is in Noord. Only two, Chapter 1896 on the Nieuwe Doelenstraat (5.0 across 17, €20–30, Wednesday to Saturday, 5 PM to 1 AM) and Stones Cafe on the Korte Leidsedwarsstraat (5.0 across 3, noon to 3 or 4 AM, closed Tuesday and Wednesday), are inside the core, and Chapter 1896 is the cocktail room of the same building as Freddy's Bar, which has a 4.6 across 612 and the $$$ price band.
Move the floor up to thirty reviews and Oost still wins the outer ring. Fitz's Bar on the Mauritskade is a 4.9 across 151, open seven nights, 2 AM on Friday and Saturday. Nieuwe Diep Distillery in the Flevopark is a 4.8 across 592 in the €10–20 band, and it closes at 6 PM, which makes it an afternoon, not a night. Bar Bukowski on the Oosterpark is the area's crowd room, a 4.4 across 2,407, 8 AM to 3 AM on a Friday. Nine rooms, average 4.80, and the lowest of them is Dakterras GAPP, a rooftop on the Eerste Ringdijkstraat at 4.3 across 381 that shuts at 9 PM.
The loudest rooms on Google are on the two squares
Now flip the filter: 500 or more reviews and a rating under 4.3. Nine rooms, and eight of them are in the centre, in 1012, 1017, or one bridge away on the Rozengracht and the Oostelijke Handelskade.
| Venue | Type | Rating | Reviews | Postcode | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panama | Club | 3.6 | 2,314 | 1019 | Eastern docks, Oostelijke Handelskade |
| Temple Bar | Bar | 4.2 | 1,853 | 1012 | Centrum, Kloveniersburgwal |
| Club NYX | Club | 3.6 | 1,644 | 1017 | Reguliersdwarsstraat |
| Bitterzoet | Club | 4.2 | 1,574 | 1012 | Centrum, Spuistraat |
| Chin Chin Club | Club | 3.7 | 1,456 | 1016 | Rozengracht, Jordaan edge |
| Oliva (restaurant & club) | Club | 3.7 | 897 | 1017 | Rembrandtplein |
| El Punto Latino | Disco club | 3.8 | 897 | 1017 | Lange Leidsedwarsstraat |
| Shelter Amsterdam | Night club | 3.6 | 787 | 1031 | Noord, under the A'DAM tower |
| The Chupitos Club | Bar | 4.0 | 739 | 1017 | Korte Leidsedwarsstraat |
Seven of the nine are clubs, which is the other half of the story: clubs in Amsterdam rate low and bars rate high, and the clubs are in the centre. The nine rooms average 3.82 across 1,351 reviews each, against 4.98 across 8.8 for the ten in the first table. The one that is not in the centre is Shelter, the techno room under the A'DAM tower on the Overhoeks side of the IJ, a 3.6 across 787 in the €20–30 band, open from 11 PM on Friday straight through to 7 AM on Sunday morning and nothing else. It is the most event-listed club on Tizy's Amsterdam feed and it is also the only room in Noord under 4.3, and the three other rated rooms across the water, BAR KRAP (5.0 across 13), ZincBar on the Badhuiskade (4.9 across 61, €10–20, 1 AM at the weekend) and Wijnbar Vindict on the Docklandsweg (4.8 across 100), average 4.90 between them. Noord is not a scene with one rating. It is a 3.6 club and three small bars the club's crowd walks past.
Panama is the same story on the other bank. It is the only rated nightlife room in 1019, Friday and Saturday 11 PM to 5 AM, 2,314 reviews at 3.6, and because it is alone in its postcode it makes the eastern docks the one outer area under the city average. Strip it out and the other four rooms on that side, Plan No.3 on the Oostenburgergracht (5.0 across 317, €10–20, 3 AM on Friday and Saturday), WC Bar, LuminAir on the eleventh floor above the Oosterdok (4.4 across 2,745, $$$) and De Sluyswacht by the Rembrandthuis (4.4 across 1,855), average 4.70.
Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein: nine clubs, one postcode, the lowest average in the city
The 1017 postcode is where the clubs are, and the clubs are why it rates 4.28. Nine of the sixteen rated clubs in Amsterdam sit here, and they split cleanly by which square. On Rembrandtplein itself, Escape at number 11 is a 4.6 across 12,306, the most-reviewed nightlife room in the city by a distance, 11 PM to 4 AM every night and 5 AM at the weekend, in the $$ band. Club Prime at number 22 is a 4.6 across 3,087, doors at 8 PM, €10–20. Those two hold more than half the reviews written about the city's clubs and they are the only two clubs in 1017 above 4.4.
Walk across the square and around the corner onto Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Leidsedwarsstraats and the ratings fall off a cliff. Club NYX and Bar Exit share the address at Reguliersdwarsstraat 42 and rate 3.6 across 1,644 and 3.7 across 384. Oliva at Rembrandtplein 17 is a 3.7 across 897. El Punto Latino, Club Candela (3.6 across 481, $$) and Lovelee on the Lijnbaansgracht (3.5 across 274) are the Leidseplein side's three clubs and none of them clears 3.8. Club Church on the Kerkstraat, a 4.4 across 917, is the only off-square club in the postcode above 4.0. If you take the nine clubs out, the eight bars and rooms left in 1017 average 4.66, which is better than the Centrum. The bars here are fine. Cafe Gollem on the Amstelstraat is a 4.7 across 1,401 and runs to 3 AM at the weekend, The Cave Rock Club on the Prinsengracht is a 4.7 across 607 and runs to 4 AM, De Heeren van Aemstel on Thorbeckeplein is a 4.6 across 2,691, and Ganbei, the private-karaoke room on the Korte Leidsedwarsstraat, is a 4.9 across 292. It is the dance floors that cost the postcode its average, not the drinks.
The practical reading: come to 1017 for a club, and pick the square over the side streets. Of the nine clubs here, Escape and Club Prime average 4.6 and the other seven average 3.8.
Centrum and the Red Light District: 28 rooms, carried by the bars
1012 is the biggest nightlife postcode in Amsterdam by a wide margin, 28 rated rooms, and it is the strangest, because it holds both ends of the city's quality range. The best-rated bar in Amsterdam is here: Backstage Bar on the Oudezijds Armsteeg, a 4.9 across 522 in Google's cheapest band, €1–10. So is CIMA Rooftop Bar on Hekelveld (4.9 across 374), Rosalia's Menagerie on the Kloveniersburgwal (4.8 across 1,220, $$$), Café De Dokter on the Rozenboomsteeg (4.8 across 541) and Cafe de Kroegtijger on the Zeedijk (4.8 across 347). The cocktail bars cluster here more than anywhere else, and they are why 1012 averages 4.51 with 7 rooms at 4.8 or better.
Then there is the strip. The Oudezijds Achterburgwal and the Warmoesstraat hold the rooms with the most foot traffic in the city and ratings of 4.0 to 4.3: Red Light Bar, The Black Tiger (4.3 across 934), Drink n Sink, Route 66 on the Enge Kerksteeg (4.0 across 401) and San Francisco Bar & Club on the Zeedijk (4.0 across 397). Eight of the 28 rooms in 1012 rate under 4.3, and six of those eight are on or beside the Red Light canals. The two clubs in the postcode are Bitterzoet on the Spuistraat (4.2 across 1,574, Thursday to Saturday only) and Eagle on the Warmoesstraat (4.1 across 286).
The split inside 1012 is by room, not by street. The postcode's seven rooms at 4.8 or better are four cocktail bars and three small cafés with a few hundred reviews each. Its eight rooms under 4.3 are six big bars and the two clubs, and the biggest review count in the postcode, Red Light Bar's 3,143, belongs to a 4.3. The Zeedijk has the whole range on one street: Het Elfde Gebod (4.6 across 979), Dutch Courage (4.7 across 861) and Kroegtijger at the top, San Francisco at 4.0 at the bottom.
The Jordaan, De Pijp and Oud-West: where the locals' rooms actually are
The Jordaan and the canals west of the Prinsengracht, 1015 and 1016, are nine rooms at 4.54, and they are the only outer area whose rooms carry centre-sized review counts, 1,695 each. Waterkant on the Marnixstraat is the most-reviewed bar in Amsterdam at 4,622 reviews and a 4.4, 3 AM on Friday and Saturday. Proeflokaal Arendsnest on the Herengracht is a 4.7 across 4,531. Café Chris on the Bloemstraat (4.7 across 1,154), Bar Oldenhof on the Elandsgracht (4.8 across 913, $$$, 2 AM at the weekend), Sins of Sal on the Westerstraat (4.8 across 473) and VINYL ROCKS on the Marnixstraat (4.8 across 825) fill out the top. The one room under 4.3 is Chin Chin Club on the Rozengracht, a 3.7 across 1,456 and the only club this side of the Singel. The Jordaan is where the brown cafés are, and the brown cafés rate.
De Pijp, 1072 and 1074, is seven rooms at 4.69 with nothing under 4.3. Wijnbar Paulus on the Ceintuurbaan is a 4.9 across 434. Bar Mokum on the Ferdinand Bolstraat is a 4.8 across 872, seven nights, 2 AM at the weekend. Bar Buka on the Albert Cuypstraat is a 4.8 across 266 and opens only Thursday to Sunday. La Dilettante on the Saenredamstraat is a 4.8 across 332. The one club in the postcode is Bon Ton on the Stadhouderskade, a strip club Google files under night club at 4.3 across 227, and it is the lowest-rated room in De Pijp.
Oud-West and the Westerpark edge, 1051 to 1054, are six rooms at 4.70, also with nothing under 4.3. Shakerato on the Stadhouderskade is a 5.0 across 47 in the €30–40 band, closed Tuesday. Fabus on the De Clercqstraat is a 4.8 across 659. De Nieuwe Anita on the Frederik Hendrikstraat, the live-music bar, is a 4.7 across 754. Bar Bario on the Bilderdijkstraat is a 4.6 across 261 and runs to 2:30 AM at the weekend. Between De Pijp and Oud-West there are thirteen rated rooms, one club, and not a single rating under 4.3. That is the whole case for the south and west in one sentence.
Rembrandtplein is where Amsterdam parks its visitors, not where it drinks. The city has moved its good rooms two tram stops out, to Oost, De Pijp and Oud-West, and the review counts have not caught up, which is why a 4.9 on 151 reviews on the Mauritskade is a better bet than a 3.7 on 897 on the square. Go where the ratings are and the queue is not.
How to pick a neighborhood in Amsterdam, by what you are actually buying
- A club, no research, any night: 1017, and stay on Rembrandtplein. Escape (4.6 across 12,306) and Club Prime (4.6 across 3,087) are the two rooms in the postcode above 4.4, open seven nights, and the other seven clubs in the postcode average 3.8.
- A lineup over a rating: Shelter in Noord (3.6, Friday night through Sunday 7 AM) or Panama on the docks (3.6, Friday and Saturday to 5 AM). Know the number before you cross the water. You are going for the booking.
- The best bar in the city, cheap: 1012, west of the Damrak. Backstage Bar (4.9 across 522, €1–10), Café De Dokter, Cafe the Barrel (4.8 across 381). Skip the Red Light canals unless the crowd is the point, which it sometimes is.
- The best-rated room with a real sample: Oost. Fitz's Bar (4.9 across 151) or, in the afternoon, Nieuwe Diep (4.8 across 592). Nine rooms, average 4.80, zero under 4.3.
- A night that ends at one, not five: De Pijp or Oud-West. Thirteen rooms, one club, nothing under 4.3, and almost everything shuts by 1 or 2 AM. Wijnbar Paulus, Bar Mokum, Fabus, Shakerato.
- Canal-side and crowded: the Jordaan. Waterkant for the terrace (4.4 across 4,622), Arendsnest for the beer (4.7 across 4,531), Oldenhof for the cocktail (4.8 across 913).
A rating is a verdict on nights that already happened, and in Amsterdam it is a verdict written mostly by tourists about the two squares. It does not know whether Fitz's has a seat free at eleven or whether Escape's floor has filled. Where a room streams live on Tizy, tap it and hear it before you commit to the tram. For the outer neighborhoods, where the review counts are thin, that one tap is most of the research.
Start with the Amsterdam nightlife hub for the city read, then clubs in Amsterdam for all sixteen rated clubs with hours, or bars in Amsterdam for the 35 rated bars and why seventeen of them share one postcode. The Amsterdam nightlife guide answers the other half of the question, which night, with the same database. For the same count in a city with no postcodes at all, the Dubai nightlife neighborhoods piece ranks the zones by rating too, and finds the business core rates worst. Or skip the reading and open Amsterdam in Tizy to hear which side of the IJ is alive right now. NIGHTS NEVER END.
FAQ
Which part of Amsterdam has the best nightlife?
It depends on whether best means most or highest-rated. By volume, the 1017 postcode around Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, with 17 rated rooms, nine of the city's sixteen clubs and 26,851 Google reviews, but it is also the lowest-rated area in the city at 4.28. By rating, Oost, where nine rated rooms around the Oosterpark, the Weesperzijde and the Indische Buurt average 4.80 with none under 4.3. The Centrum, 1012, is the biggest area at 28 rooms and sits almost exactly on the city average of 4.54.
Which neighborhood is the Red Light District in Amsterdam?
De Wallen, the oldest part of the Centrum, in the 1012 postcode east of the Damrak: the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal canals, the Warmoesstraat and the Zeedijk, a five-minute walk from Centraal station. It shares the postcode with the Dam, the Spui and the Nieuwezijds side, which is why 1012 holds 28 of Amsterdam's 94 rated nightlife rooms. The rooms on the Red Light canals themselves carry the most reviews in the city and rate 4.0 to 4.3; the rooms west of the Damrak rate 4.6 to 5.0.
What time is best for the Red Light District in Amsterdam?
For the bars, before one. The posted hours for the rated rooms on the strip run to 1 AM midweek and 3 AM on Friday and Saturday, with The Black Tiger, Temple Bar and Drink n Sink all on that pattern. The area is also where the city's street rules are strictest, with a drinking ban and a smoking ban outdoors, so the night here is the bar, not the canal. If the plan is a late one, the two clubs in the postcode are Bitterzoet, Thursday to Saturday to 4 AM, and Eagle on the Warmoesstraat.
Where should I stay in Amsterdam for nightlife?
Near the Amstel if you want to walk home from a club, near the Oosterpark if you want to walk home from a good bar. 1017 puts Escape, Club Prime and the Leidseplein rooms within ten minutes on foot, at the cost of staying in the loudest, lowest-rated postcode in the city. Oost, a short tram ride east of the Amstel, has the highest-rated rooms in Amsterdam and night buses back from the centre. De Pijp is the compromise most locals would give you: seven rated rooms at 4.69, nothing under 4.3, and the Rembrandtplein clubs a fifteen-minute walk north.
Is Amsterdam Noord worth the ferry for a night out?
For one room, yes, and only on a Friday or Saturday. Shelter, under the A'DAM tower on the Overhoeks side, is the most event-listed club on Tizy's Amsterdam feed, opens at 11 PM on Friday and runs through to 7 AM on Sunday, and rates 3.6 across 787, the only room in Noord under 4.3. The other three rated rooms across the water, BAR KRAP, ZincBar and Wijnbar Vindict, average 4.90 across 174 reviews between them and are bars, not clubs, with midnight or 1 AM closes. The ferry from behind Centraal is free and runs all night.
Is it okay to wear jeans to clubs in Amsterdam?
Yes. The door reality in Amsterdam is casual, and jeans with a plain top gets you into every club in the database, including the two 4.6s on Rembrandtplein. What gets groups turned away is not the trousers, it is arriving as six men at 1 AM, which the doors on the Leidsedwarsstraats treat as a reason by itself. Tracksuit bottoms are the one thing that reliably fails. The minimum age is 18 at most rooms and 21 at a few, and ID is checked.
What should a tourist not do on a night out in Amsterdam?
Do not pick a club by its queue. Seven of the nine clubs in 1017 average 3.8 and the other two, Escape and Club Prime, average 4.6, and the queues do not tell you which is which. Do not drink or smoke in the street on the Red Light canals, where both carry fines. Do not buy anything from anyone who approaches you on the Warmoesstraat. And do not assume the centre is the whole city: 49 of Amsterdam's 94 rated nightlife rooms are outside the two core postcodes, and they average 4.65 against 4.42 inside.
