The short Chicago nightlife guide is this: it is a bar city with a two-night club week and a late-hour license that keeps thirteen rooms open until 4 AM on a Thursday. Nothing else on the first page of Google will tell you which thirteen. Tizy has revealed 216 rated nightlife rooms in Chicago, 203 bars, lounges, pubs and music rooms against 13 clubs, and 211 of them open on a Friday while 151 open on a Monday. The bars average 4.51 on Google, the clubs 4.06. On the events side, Tizy's feed carries 172 upcoming Chicago listings, 137 of them on a Friday or Saturday, which puts the city 16th of the 387 cities on the feed and makes it one of the most weekend-heavy of the big ones. Every figure here was measured on 2026-10-29 from tizy-db, the venue database behind Tizy, and every room named is a real listing with its real rating, review count and posted hours.
The rest of the guide is the long version of that paragraph. Which nights the city is actually open, who is still pouring at 3:30 AM on a weeknight, what the clubs post against what the bars post, and how Chicago's week compares with every other city's. The pages that rank for this query give you a directory of the Loop, a list of underground party crews, and eighteen things to do after dark with a rooftop in most of them. None of them prints a posted hour or a rating with its review count. This one prints nothing else.
The week has two nights, and both halves of the database agree
Google stores a posted schedule for 211 of the 216 revealed nightlife rooms, and Tizy's feed stores a local start time for every one of the 172 upcoming listings. Lay the two side by side, night by night, and add the one number no listicle can compute, which is where Chicago ranks that night against every other city on the feed.
| Night | Rooms posting hours that open | Clubs open (of 13) | Rooms closing after 2 AM | Feed listings | Chicago's rank among feed cities that night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 151 (60 closed) | 3 | 13 | 0 | no listing |
| Tuesday | 169 (42 closed) | 2 | 12 | 3 | #16 of 56 |
| Wednesday | 194 (17 closed) | 6 | 15 | 7 | #11 of 87 |
| Thursday | 203 (8 closed) | 7 | 16 | 13 | #26 of 157 |
| Friday | 211 (0 closed) | 13 | 31 | 64 | #14 of 281 |
| Saturday | 210 (1 closed) | 13 | 95 | 73 | #16 of 309 |
| Sunday | 188 (23 closed) | 6 | 15 | 12 | #14 of 133 |
Read the rank column first, because it is the surprise. Chicago is a mid-table feed city and it stays one on every night of the week. It never climbs into the top ten on any night, and it never drops below 16th except on a Thursday, where 25 other cities out-list it on the night most guides sell as the start of the weekend. The cities above it are the ones you would expect, London with 985 upcoming listings, Berlin 928, New York 790, Barcelona 516, Tokyo 503, then Madrid, Amsterdam, Manchester, Paris and Los Angeles, and Chicago sits between Montreal at 175 and Liverpool at 158.
Now read the posted-hours columns, because they tell you the rank is not the whole story. On a Monday, 151 rooms are open and 13 of them run past 2 AM, and the feed has nothing to say about any of them. The feed is a promoter's calendar, built from Resident Advisor, and it sees clubs. The rooms that make Chicago a seven-night city are the ones the feed cannot see.
Chicago is a late-license city, not a late city
Posted closing times in Chicago split into two groups and almost nothing in between. The standard group closes at 2 AM Sunday through Friday and 3 AM on a Saturday. The late-hour group closes at 4 AM every night and 5 AM on a Saturday. On a Thursday, 92 rooms post a 2 AM close, 3 post 3 AM, and 13 post 4 AM. That is the whole late shift of a city of nearly three million, and it fits in one list.
The 4 AM Thursday rooms, by rating: Old Town Ale House at 219 W North Ave, a 4.6 across 857 reviews in the $10–20 band; The Lodge Tavern at 21 W Division St, a 4.5 across 443; Cleos Bar and Grill at 1935 W Chicago Ave, a 4.4 across 1,031; Streeter's Tavern at 50 E Chicago Ave, a 4.3 across 861; Hopsmith Chicago at 15 W Division St, a 4.2 across 1,092 in the $20–30 band; Uptown Lounge & Coffee Shop at 1136 W Lawrence Ave, a 4.2 across 601; Alice's Lounge, a karaoke bar at 3556 W Belmont Ave, a 4.2 across 582; Mother Hubbard's Sports Pub at 5 W Hubbard St, a 4.1 across 1,521; Sidekick's Entertainment Lounge at 4424 W Montrose Ave, a 4.1 across 693; She-nannigans at 16 W Division St, a 4.0 across 539; and three clubs, Celeste at 111 W Hubbard St, a 3.9 across 1,453, Hydrate Nightclub at 3458 N Halsted St, a 3.8 across 309, and Fantasy Nightclub at 3641 N Halsted St, a 3.6 across 235. Two hookah rooms close at 3, The Red Room at 7021 N Clark St, a 4.8 across 219, and Mr. Hookah Cafe at 5005 W Lawrence Ave, a 4.6 across 231.
Three of the thirteen stand on one block. The Lodge at number 21, Hopsmith at 15 and She-nannigans at 16 are the Division Street strip in the Gold Coast, with Gold Coast Social at number 7, a 4.0 across 527, posting a 2 AM close beside them. If you want a weeknight that runs past 3 in Chicago without a cover, that block is the answer, and it has been for long enough that the ratings reflect it.
| Thursday posted close | Rooms | Avg rating | Clubs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight or earlier | 71 | 4.56 | 2 |
| 1–1:30 AM | 24 | 4.58 | 0 |
| 2 AM | 92 | 4.46 | 2 |
| 3 AM | 3 | 4.43 | 0 |
| 4 AM | 13 | 4.15 | 3 |
The ladder drops a third of a star at the bottom rung. On a Saturday the same ladder runs 4.59 at midnight, 4.52 at 2 AM, 4.45 at 3 AM and 4.19 for the 22 rooms open until 4 or 5, seven of them clubs. The late license is a license to stay open, and the rooms that hold one are rated for being open, not for being good. Old Town Ale House is the exception at both hours, a 4.6 that closes at 5 on a Saturday night.
The clubs post 48 hours a week; the bars post seven nights
All thirteen revealed clubs post Friday and Saturday hours, and Garcia's Chicago at 1001 W Washington Blvd, a 4.7 across 179, is the only one that closes before midnight, 6:30 to 11:30 PM. Seven post a Thursday. Three post a Monday: Surreal Nightlife & Bottle Service, a 4.6 across 130 that is a table-booking promoter filed as a night club with "Open 24 hours" typed into every day of the week; Hydrate at 3458 N Halsted, a 3.8 across 309, which runs to 2 AM on a Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday; and President's Lounge at 653 E 75th St in Chatham, a 4.3 across 216, noon to 2 AM six nights and 3 AM on a Saturday, the only club in the city with a posted schedule seven days a week.
The famous names keep club hours. The Mine Chicago at 1431 W Lake St, a 3.9 across 1,313 in Google's $100+ tier, is closed Thursday and posts 4 AM on a Friday and 5 AM on a Saturday. smartbar at 3730 N Clark St, a 3.9 across 538, posts exactly the same two nights plus a Sunday, and so does Spybar at 646 N Franklin St, a 3.8 across 465, minus the Sunday. Le Nocturne Chicago at 4810 N Broadway in Uptown, a 4.1 across 214, posts 3:30 AM on a Friday and 4:30 on a Saturday. Masada Nightclub at 2206 N California Ave in Logan Square, a 4.0 across 723, is one of the seven clubs that post a Thursday, closing at 2, and it posts a Wednesday too. Stereo Nightclub at 5616 W Diversey Ave, a 4.2 across 680, and Seven Nightclub at 3124 N Central Ave, a 4.0 across 381, both post Friday 2 AM and Saturday 3 AM, standard hours, out in Belmont Cragin.
The bars are the other half of the city and they do not take Monday off. Of the 211 nightlife rooms with a posted schedule, 151 open on a Monday. The 60 that close are ten of the thirteen clubs and fifty bars and lounges. Gus' Sip & Dip at 51 W Hubbard St, a 4.9 across 2,580 and the best-rated room in Chicago with more than a thousand reviews, posts 4 PM to midnight Monday through Thursday and noon to 1 AM on a Friday and Saturday. Kingston Mines at 2548 N Halsted St, the blues club with a 4.7 across 3,758, posts a 5 AM Saturday close. Hopleaf at 5148 N Clark St, a 4.7 across 3,800, Thalia Hall at 1807 S Allport St in Pilsen, a 4.7 across 3,640, and Blue Chicago at 536 N Clark St, a 4.7 across 1,745, are the other rooms over a thousand reviews at 4.7 or better. The most-reviewed bar in the city is Three Dots and a Dash at 435 N Clark St, a 4.6 across 8,002 in Google's $$$ tier, and the most-reviewed club is Celeste with 1,453. The bar carries five and a half times the reviews and seven tenths of a star more.
Hubbard Street is where the two halves meet
If you want the whole guide in one block, walk Hubbard Street in River North. Eight revealed rooms stand on it between number 5 and number 353. Gus' Sip & Dip at 51 W is the 4.9. Andy's Jazz Club at 11 E Hubbard is a 4.5 across 3,825 in the $30–50 band. Theory at 9 W is a 4.5 across 1,373. Parlay River North at 112 W is a 4.5 across 689 in the $50–100 band. Howl at the Moon at 26 W, the dueling-piano room that sits in Google's local pack for this search, is a 4.4 across 3,733. The Bassment at 353 W is a 4.4 across 900. Mother Hubbard's at 5 W is the 4.1 that stays open until 4, and Celeste at 111 W is the 3.9 that does the same with a $$$ tier and a line.
That block holds both ends of the city's rating curve inside four blocks. The two rooms that post a 4 AM close are the two lowest-rated rooms on the street. The room that closes at midnight on a weeknight is the highest-rated room in the city. If the Division Street strip is the late-license argument, Hubbard Street is the counter-argument, and both are true.
The feed says the same thing from the other side
Tizy's events feed holds 172 upcoming Chicago listings between tonight and 28 November, all from Resident Advisor. By local start time they fall Monday 0, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 7, Thursday 13, Friday 64, Saturday 73 and Sunday 12. Friday and Saturday carry 137 of the 172, which is 79.7 percent, and Monday through Thursday carry 23, which is 13.4 percent. Among the 34 feed cities with at least a hundred upcoming listings, that is the 11th-lowest weekday share. Berlin runs 27.8 percent of its listings Monday to Thursday, Tokyo 32.6, Barcelona 28.7, New York 21.4, London 17.3. Toronto at 11.9 and Sydney at 3.4 are among the ten cities with a more concentrated weekend than Chicago's. Miami, for the record, is 13.5, a tenth of a point above.
The weeknight listings are a short list of rooms. Le Nocturne posts two Wednesdays, smartbar one Wednesday and one Thursday, Podlasie Club two Thursdays, Bourbon On Division one of each, and The California Clipper at 1002 N California Ave, a 4.6 across 780, posts a free Thursday. Tonight, a Thursday, the feed has four Chicago listings and two of them are free. Tomorrow it has 27, and Saturday 31 October has 30, the biggest single night in the window, with four free doors among them. Priced Friday and Saturday listings average $18.27 and $18.81, so a weekend door in this city runs under twenty dollars.
Sunday is the one night the feed and the clubs agree on. The 12 Sunday listings include four at smartbar, which posts a Sunday close of 4 AM and is the home of the Queen! residency, and singles at Guild Row, Elastic Arts, Cafe Mustache and Bridgeport Records. Chicago ranks 14th of the 133 feed cities with a Sunday listing, which is a better rank than its Saturday one, on a sixth of the listings.
Chicago does not have a late night. It has a late license, and the two are different things. Thirteen rooms hold the city's 4 AM on a Thursday, three of them on one block of Division Street, and they average a third of a star below the rooms that close at 2. The night does not go late here because the city stays up. It goes late because a handful of rooms are allowed to.
How to use this on a Wednesday
A rule of thumb from the two tables. If you have one weeknight in Chicago, make it a bar and make it early, because 194 rooms open on a Wednesday at an average 4.49 and six clubs do, Masada and President's Lounge among them. If you want a club, you have Friday and Saturday and almost nothing else, and the feed's 137 weekend listings against 23 weeknight ones say the promoters know it. If you want to be out past 3 on a weeknight, the thirteen rooms above are the complete list, pick by rating, and know that the best of them is a 4.6 on North Avenue and the worst is a 3.6 on Halsted.
Three honest limits. A posted schedule is Google's record of what the venue typed in: five of the 216 nightlife rooms have none, and Surreal's reads "Open 24 hours" seven days a week because it is a booking desk, not a room. The feed is one source, Resident Advisor, so it sees electronic rooms and the crews that book them, and it does not see Kingston Mines on a Tuesday or the Green Mill on any night. And a rank among feed cities is a count of listings, not a measure of how good a night was. Seventy-three Saturday listings do not know whether smartbar's main room is full at 1 AM this particular Saturday, and a 3.9 across 538 does not know either. Tizy streams the rooms that have a mic in them, so the move on a night the table calls a coin flip is to open the room in the app and listen for thirty seconds before you pay the door.
Start with the Chicago nightlife hub for all 216 rooms ranked in one read, then clubs in Chicago for the 13 clubs with their posted hours and price bands, or bars in Chicago for the 203 rooms that out-rate them. For the same week-shape cut in a city with a different answer, the Barcelona nightlife guide runs the numbers on a market where the clubs open at midnight and close at six, seven nights on the beachfront, and the New York nightlife guide on the busiest feed city on this continent. Or skip the reading and open Chicago in Tizy to hear which room is alive right now. NIGHTS NEVER END, and in Chicago thirteen of them end at four.
FAQ
Is Chicago good for nightlife?
By the numbers, yes, as a bar city. Tizy has revealed 216 rated nightlife rooms in Chicago and 203 of them are bars, lounges, pubs and music rooms averaging 4.51 on Google, with 211 opening on a Friday and 151 on a Monday. The 13 clubs average 4.06 and ten of them close on a Monday. On Tizy's events feed Chicago is the 16th-busiest of 387 cities with 172 upcoming listings, between Montreal and Liverpool, and it holds a rank between 11th and 26th on every night of the week except Monday, when it has no listing at all.
What time do bars close in Chicago?
Posted hours split into two groups. The standard close is 2 AM Sunday through Friday and 3 AM on a Saturday: on a Thursday, 92 of the 203 rooms that open post a 2 AM close. The late-hour group closes at 4 AM on a weeknight and 5 AM on a Saturday, and on a Thursday that is 13 rooms, Old Town Ale House, The Lodge Tavern, Cleos, Streeter's Tavern, Hopsmith, Uptown Lounge, Alice's Lounge, Mother Hubbard's, Sidekick's, She-nannigans, Celeste, Hydrate and Fantasy. On a Saturday 22 rooms run to 4 or 5 AM, seven of them clubs, with Kingston Mines and Old Town Ale House the two rated 4.6 or better.
What is the best night to go out in Chicago?
Saturday has the most of everything: 210 rooms open, 95 of them past 2 AM, all 13 clubs, and 73 feed listings. Friday is the same night with 64 listings and 31 rooms past 2 AM. If you are measuring Chicago against other cities, Wednesday is its strongest night relative to the field, 11th of 87 feed cities on 7 listings, and Thursday its weakest at 26th of 157 on 13. Monday has 151 rooms open and nothing on the feed, which is the night the ratings are highest and the covers are lowest.
Is there anything to do in Chicago on a Thursday night?
Yes, but it is a bar night. 203 nightlife rooms open on a Thursday, 16 run past 2 AM, and seven of the thirteen clubs open: Celeste, Hydrate and Fantasy until 4, Masada and President's Lounge until 2, Garcia's until 11:30 PM, and Surreal, which is a booking desk. The feed carries 13 Thursday listings in the window, four of them free, at rooms like The California Clipper, smartbar, Podlasie Club and Bourbon On Division. The Division Street strip in the Gold Coast, The Lodge, Hopsmith and She-nannigans, is the one block where three rooms run to 4 AM on a Thursday within a hundred metres of each other.
Is there Sunday nightlife in Chicago?
Less than you would guess from the posters and more than the clubs suggest. 188 rooms open on a Sunday and 15 run past 2 AM, 13 of them until 4. Six clubs open, and smartbar is the one that matters, with four of the city's 12 Sunday feed listings and its Queen! residency. Chicago ranks 14th of the 133 feed cities with a Sunday listing, a better rank than its Saturday one on far fewer events. The 23 rooms that close on a Sunday are seven of the thirteen clubs and 16 bars.
Which area of Chicago is best for nightlife?
It depends on which half of the city you want. For rated rooms within a block, Hubbard Street in River North holds eight revealed rooms from Gus' Sip & Dip, a 4.9 across 2,580, to Celeste, a 3.9 across 1,453, with Andy's Jazz Club, Theory, Howl at the Moon, Parlay and The Bassment between them. For the late license, the Division Street strip in the Gold Coast has three 4 AM rooms on one block. For clubs, the posters point to River North and the West Loop, but the best-rated full-time clubs post from Chatham, Uptown and Belmont Cragin. The neighborhood-by-neighborhood grid is the next piece in this series.
